RE: New Service Learning Requirements
WHY IS SERVICE SO IMPORTANT?
Very simply, because Jesus said so: ‘…I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me.’ … ‘Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.’ (excerpt from Matt 25: 31-46)
SERVICE LEARNING BEGINS NOW!
“We live to serve!” has been a motto of St. Paul Elementary School. The high school and junior high Theology department is taking it a step further: We live to serve well! To accomplish that, we will be focusing on service learning.
WHAT IS SERVICE LEARNING?
Service learning is a form of experiential Catholic Christian education in which students engage in activities that address human and community needs together with structured opportunities for reflection. The ultimate goal of SPH/JH service learning is to live our faith, being Christ for people who are most in need, and to recognize His presence in every person we serve.
WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW RIGHT NOW?
Beginning with the 2015-16 school year, all SPH students are required to complete a minimum of 15 hours of service in the first semester, and ten hours in the second. All hours are to outside the school day.
Summer is a great time to begin the hours for your first semester! There are many opportunities to serve well: YES (Youth Elect Service), Vacation Bible School or other programs at your parish or church, Norwalk Area Food Bank or food pantries in your area, Salvation Army, Huron County Clothing Bank, When Pigs Fly (benefiting The Piggyback Foundation, Habitat For Humanity, the Humane Society, Rails To Trails, and other charitable or not-for-profit agencies.
Are you interested in doing something that’s not on the above list - or are you are unsure if what you want to do qualifies as service? Sophomores need to contact Mrs. Krystowski at [email protected]. In your email, explain what you want to do, who would benefit and how, how it will help your relationship with God, and anything else you think is important.
DOCUMENT YOUR HOURS!
Be sure you document your hours. Start by taking a “service selfie” with an adult in charge. Also take photos of what you’re doing, and have someone take some of you working. Make a visual journal of your experience.
You also need to document your summer hours with a note/letter from an adult in charge or one of the forms available in Theology class or click here to download a general log or click here to download a form for on-going service. Be sure the date(s) and time(s) of service, total hours spent, a brief summary of what you did, a signature and phone number are included.
